Ms. Strohmeyer organized a citizens’ group to try to preserve those wetlands. The group was successful and the issue attracted the attention of people throughout the town where her name became well known. In 1991, Ms. Strohmeyer was recruited to become a candidate for membership on the Township Committee. She agreed and together with Bill Lotz, she ran in a five-way race for two seats on the Township Committee. They won those seats and have gone on to win those seats for FIve more terms. She served as Mayor in 1997, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2006, and 2007. She also served several terms as Deputy Mayor. In Rochelle Park’s 130 or so year history, there have only been two women elected to the Township Committee. The first woman elected was Mary Daly who served as Mayor in 1988.

While serving on the Township Committee, Ms. Strohmeyer focused on beautification projects throughout town. Together with a group of local residents known as Rochelle Park Project Pride, she coordinated efforts to beautify the triangular pocket park near the corner of Essex and Rochelle, traffic islands on Somerville and James Street, the corner of Harvey and Plaza Way as well as supporting Rochelle Park Baseball’s work to plant a shrub border at Mathews Field.

Project Pride is also responsible for coordinating the effort to build and landscape the gazebo on the Municipal Building property.

Ms. Strohmeyer led the effort to achieve the intersection improvement at Rochelle Avenue and Passaic Street.  That improvement was accomplished without cost to the Rochelle Park taxpayers.
Additionally, she led negotiations with Westfield's Garden State Plaza.  That effort resulted in an unprecedented agreement with Westfield for an annual payment to Rochelle Park of $125,000 that will increase yearly, beginning in 2007, by the amount of the Consumer Price Index.

Over the years, Ms. Strohmeyer has served as Liaison to the Department of Public Works, the Rochelle Park Library, Senior Citizens Club, Environmental Commission, Veterans, Planning Board and has served on a number of committees with Mr. Lotz and members of the Police Department. She has also served several terms on the Bergen County Planning Board.

Ms. Strohmeyer is passionate about her flower garden and enjoys spending time kayaking and bird watching with her husband. Nothing pleases her more than being with her family. In fact, she tells us, "I am honored to serve Rochelle Park and am committed to the preserving of our small, family town quality of life. It has been an ideal place to raise our children who come back often to visit. Wherever I go I am proud to represent our community."

Born and raised in the Philadelphia area, Ms. Strohmeyer and her husband Warren, a Maywood native, moved to Rochelle Park in 1974. Their three children, Erik, Philip and Julia, are all graduates of Midland School.

Ms. Strohmeyer graduated Villanova University with a degree in Social Sciences and received her Master’s Degree in Child Development from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

The year 1988 saw the beginning of Ms. Strohmeyer’s public career in Rochelle Park.
