Be
Aware and Alert of Your Neighborhood |

There are many things homeowners can do to protect their property. There are locks and alarms, and ways in which to make a home appear occupied, even if it isn’t. One of the best ways to prevent burglaries is to be aware and alert.

Police Chief Zavinsky suggests the following guidelines:
|
| |
- Get to know your neighbors; become a partner in watching the activities in your neighborhood
- Be suspicious. Report unusual or suspicious behavior to the police immediately. Write down descriptions of suspicious persons and/or license plate numbers of vehicle(s) involved
- Be aware of strangers, young or old, male or female, who ring your doorbell and ask vague or strange questions
- Be wary of persons who seek information about you or your neighbors. Notify police of these persons, and of any unusual telephone calls
- Inform a trusted neighbor if your home is to be unoccupied for a period of time
- Look after your neighbors’ home when they’re away, and ask them to look after yours
- Establish and attend meetings with your local crime prevention officer. Find out what you can do about local crime
- Above all, be concerned! It’s the most effective way to reduce or prevent crime, and to make your neighborhood a safe one
